Mahjong Solitaire: rules and examples

Read the aim of Mahjong Solitaire, then make your first move. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Look at what changes after your first action.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Practice beyond the first move

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

What the game asks you to do

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Read that aim before choosing your first action. The example below illustrates a decision.

Making your moves

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Tap two free matching tiles. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A closer look at one example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Take a moment to compare.

A useful caution

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
